My daughter Hannah has been tutoring a girl named Marie every Tuesday night for the past year. Marie is eight years old,. She, along with her mother, two brothers, and sister, came from Mali, seeking asylum in the United States.

Last winter, Marie was told she would have to repeat second grade, but thanks to Hannah (though she steadfastly refuses to take credit) Marie is entering third grade this week. Marie’s mother, Nikali, wanted to show her appreciation to Hannah by inviting us dinner.

Hannah and I took the subway to the Bronx and walked to their apartment. The building was drab, with small wire-covered windows, piles of trash, and rampant graffiti. When we got inside, we found the ill-lit lobby reeked of urine. After climbing the stairs to the second floor, Nikali, who had just gotten home from her 11 hour shift (she makes $8.00 an hour as a home health aide), greeted us with hugs and kisses on both cheeks. She then set to work in her cramped kitchen, making a feast of steak and shrimp and fried plantains and hard boiled eggs and beans. I couldn’t even figure out how she accomplished this, with barely a square inch of counter space.

After cooking, Nikali showed us around the apartment, which was clean, bright and cheerful. When the family first moved in, they were plagued by rats, so Nikali sealed up any openings in the walls with cement. She showed us the bedroom she shared with her daughters. It contained four bare single bed mattresses on the floor. The other bedroom belonged to her sons, ages 16 and 14. This room was equally sparsely outfitted, with two mattresses on the floor, though the boys had their own small television set. Hannah and I ate on a carefully set table in the narrow entrance hall. Nikali kept filling our plates and encouraging us to eat. While we did the best we could with the mountains of food, Nikali told us that she was her husband’s second wife. He was a very powerful man in Mali. She had three servants and didn’t have to lift a finger. But Nikali left everything behind to come to the United States because she would not submit to her husband’s demand that their daughters be circumcised.

Here, she is barely able to make ends meet. Every cent goes to groceries and the rent. She is looking for a cheaper place and a better job. But in the meantime, Nikali finds things to smile about. She is grateful because- and these are her exact words: “I know now I am a strong woman.” Then, she left off talking about herself to tell me, again and again, how grateful she was for my daughter, who had taken the time to change her daughter’s life.

It was close to midnight when we left. I wasn’t the least bit tired. I was joyfully reflecting on the evening’s lesson: that when the light of goodness touches the greater good, it doesn’t just shine, it illuminates.

You cannot depend upon anybody except yourself. There is always some sort of recompense to be made. People have expectations from you whether or not they should. And so one should remember that your life is dictated and shaped by the thoughts within your mind. I should ideally remember that, and put it into practice…but life is messy. I will try harder.
