I'm an academic junkie. Some of the stuff I like are antique maps, Richard Feynman and Carl Sagan, graphic novel and comic book culture, and reading American historical nonfiction (especially about Lewis & Clark, the Civil War and early western pioneering life). Someday I'd like to have a motorcycle built from the ground up.

I'm an INTJ. Starcraft, beer, and whiskey take up a significant amount of my "free time" other than reading and dicking around on the internet. And cooking, I guess. I'm a big fan of Ina Garten.

To all those people who want welfare applicants to be tested for drugs I just gotta say this.

An addict that doesn’t have a job, doesn’t have a home, and is starving…needs to somehow gain access to rehab services, sustenance, attention and a place to stay. It bothers me because denying an addict welfare is a denial of social responsibility. If you don’t want to help those people, at least admit that you’re selfish enough to not want to help them.

But I’m just speaking from my experience as an addict. People who have never been down and out; who have never had the misfortune to be in a place of utter despair (trust me, I know just how deep that despair can go) just don’t understand what a blessing social welfare can be.

I’m here today because I was fortunate enough to have parents who forced me into intervention and a rehabilitation program. Not everyone is as lucky. Every time I go to a 12 step meeting I bless Buddha and whatever lucky star I have because I remember what it was like to have lost control over my life.

If you, as a person, are committed to the ideal of compassionate and empathetic living…don’t take away social services. As the Buddhists say…if you can help, try and help. But if you can’t, don’t harm them. Even if you might not be willing to personally help them, don’t punish them.

Stop and think about how one small choice affects hundreds of other people.
